CHILD ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION
In the assessment the child is observed performing a sequence of exercises and activities which help illuminate the state of development. The assessment also evaluates visual movement, memory, fine and gross motor abilities, motor planning and postural control. The student’s functioning is assessed from both a movement and a sensory perspective. Areas of challenge that may interfere with a child’s functioning in and out of school are identified. One to one Educational Support sessions for children who display signs of learning and behavior difficulties, are generally given once or twice a week for one hour. It is common to begin with a twelve week commitment and may be beneficial to continue lessons for a year or more, depending on the child’s progress.
“Paula is a keen observer and has a gentle, playful way with children. I highly recommend her assessments and therapies for children with a variety of sensory integration issues.” Cameron McCoin, MD
In cooperation with the teacher, the classroom is evaluated with regard to the children who are experiencing difficulties. There may be children who are light or sound sensitive sitting near a blinking fluorescent light; a touch sensitive child sitting next to someone who has difficulty staying in their seat, and so on. The goal is to help provide a supportive environment which benefits students and teachers.
“Paula Lynam’s unique style with children is a joy to watch. She is able to involve children in movements that integrate their bodies and minds while they just think they are having fun! After only a short while with Paula, some of our children who have the most trouble calming down were able to find their peaceful center and were able to spend a productive day learning.” Bette Moore, Upper Chetco Charter School
